Departures July through October 2009

This program is not suitable for children under the ageof 8.

See the Great Barrier Reef, then join researchers and Australia’s Indigenous Rangers to help save the sea turtles on Australia’s spectacular northern peninsula, Cape York.

Spend 2 days in Cairns and see the Great Barrier Reef before heading out to save the turtles!

Travel to the northern most tip of Australia, to the wild and sparsely populated wilderness of Cape York, where the Mapoon Aboriginal Community will warmly welcome you to assist in their efforts to save native sea turtle populations. Sadly the survival of the Green, Hawksbill, Flat Back and Olive Ridley Turtles is threatened by the introduction of predators, including wild dogs, feral pigs and ghost nets used for commercial fishing.  But you can help save the turtles by participating in rescue activities lead by the local people.

During turtle monitoring activities you will gather vital data that is used by Aboriginal rangers and researchers. Get up close to baby turtle while quantifying the size and structure of nesting populations, and monitoring trends in the nesting environment.

Witness the stunning colors of dawns and dusks on the western Cape as you travel the magnificent coastline in 4WDs, spotting turtles and recording data.

Back at the camp, in the true sense of getting away from it all, immerse yourself and relax in this spectacular and peaceful environment. Enjoy lots of opportunities to explore the regions abundant waterways, crystal clear creeks and white sandy beaches. You can also enjoy bush tucker walks, fishing and bird watching.

Participation in the Cape York Turtle Rescue supports ongoing conservation and research on the Western Cape. Your visit gives you the opportunity to participate in conservation projects and contribute to the long term protection of endangered and vulnerable sea turtles. No prior experience is required.
